Sasha Pivovarova was born in Moscow in 1985. As a very young girl, Sasha’s mother introduced her to the world of art by taking her to new exhibitions and enrolling her in art classes at the age of 6. Having thereby instilled a love and appreciation of great art, Sasha Pivovarova’s lifelong dream has been to make a name for herself as an artist. In fact, prior to being signed as a model in 2005 by IMG, she was enrolled at the University of Moscow where she was studying art history. In addition to these academic pursuits, Sasha Pivovarova has also taken art classes at the St. Petersburg New Academy of Fine Art where she studied under the tutelage of New York-based photographer Igor Vishnyakov.
Sasha Pivovarova began modeling in February of 2005, after Igor Vishnyakov sent photos of her to IMG. Within a few weeks, she was signed and sent to Milan where she opened Prada’s Spring 2005 collection. Phenomenally, within a year of being in the cutthroat modeling industry, Sasha Pivovarova had climbed to the top of the heap. Having appeared on two Italian Vogue covers, she had reached the modeling summit, making her the “it” girl of global fashion.
After doing her first runway, Sasha Pivovarova went on to become the longest running muse in Prada’s history. Although Linda Evangelista is set to replace her for Prada’s Fall ’08 campaign, Sasha Pivovarova was the first model to serve Prada for six consecutive seasons. She is also the face of Armani cosmetics.
In an issue of Vogue magazine, Sasha Pivovarova’s private residence in Brooklyn, New York, provides the focus for the article. Her Brooklyn loft, which doubles as an art studio, is where Sasha the artist works on her sideline career as a painter and sketch artist. She held an exhibition at a gallery in Paris, and there is no doubt that her notoriety as a model will help her find an audience for her art.
After taking photos of Sasha Pivovarova and using his connections in the New York fashion industry to launch her career, Igor Vishnyakov married Sasha Pivovarova. He has described his protege-turned-wife as such: “When I saw her as a photographer, I realized she would be every photographer’s dream because of her features, because of the way she transforms and her body language and the way she wears the clothes.”
