Though it marked a drop of about 47 percent from the film’s debut weekend, the gross was more than double Oz’s nearest competitor, The Call, which landed in second place on its opening weekend with earnings of $17.1 million. The thriller starring Halle Berry was followed by the weekend’s other new movie, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which flopped with earnings of $10.3 million — marking one of the lowest debuting films ever for stars Steve Carell and Jim Carrey.
Rounding out the top five were Jack the Giant Slayer ($6.2 million) and Identity Thief ($4.5 million).
Coming in sixth was Snitch, with $3.5 million, and 21 and Over took the seventh spot with $2.6 million.
Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook held steady at No. 8 in its 18th week in theaters, earning $2.58 million. And closing out the Top 10 were Safe Haven ($2.5 million) and Escape from Planet Earth ($2.3 million).
